Shallot, not red onion

Indonesians call this crop bawang merah, which translates literally as “red onion” but means shallot — Allium cepa var. aggregatum. It grows in clustered bulbs, carries a sharper aroma, and trades at a different price from the large single-bulb red onion. Both move under HS 0703.10 (Onions and shallots, fresh or chilled), which is exactly why enquiries get crossed. Every figure on this page refers to shallots.

Buyer questions

Is bawang merah the same as red onion?

No. Bawang merah is a shallot (Allium cepa var. aggregatum) — smaller, sold in clustered bulbs, and priced differently from the large single-bulb red onion. Both travel under HS 0703.10, which is why the two are so often confused on paperwork. Everything we supply is shallot.

What is your minimum order quantity for export?

10 tonnes — One 20ft reefer container. Smaller air-freight lots are possible for samples and trial shipments, but sea freight below one container rarely makes commercial sense once handling costs are counted.

How much fits into one container?

A 20ft reefer holds roughly 10 tonnes net (trial order or split-market shipment). A 40ft HC reefer holds roughly 24 tonnes net (best freight cost per kilogram). Exact figures are confirmed with the forwarder for each destination.

Which incoterms and payment terms do you work with?

We quote FOB, CFR, CIF from Tanjung Emas, Semarang. Payment is either 30% telegraphic transfer in advance, 70% against copy of Bill of Lading, or Irrevocable Letter of Credit at sight, confirmed by a prime bank.

What documents come with each shipment?

Commercial Invoice and Packing List; Phytosanitary Certificate issued by the Indonesian Agricultural Quarantine Agency; Certificate of Origin (Form D / Form E / Form AI as required by destination); Bill of Lading or Air Waybill; Fumigation Certificate on request.

When is Indonesian shallot available?

Peak harvest runs April to June and September to November. Year-round supply from staggered planting across Central Java

How do I get a price?

Send CV Bawang Merah Nusantara your destination port, required grade, volume, and target shipping window. Shallot is a fresh commodity whose farm-gate price moves weekly, so we issue quotations against the day's market rather than publishing a fixed price list.

Tell us your destination port and volume

We reply with grade availability, the nearest loading window, and an FOB Tanjung Emas, Semarang quotation in USD. Trial containers are welcome — most long-running accounts started with one.
